High-protein foods continue to be a major nutrition trend in 2026, and for good reason. Protein supports muscle maintenance, recovery, satiety, and overall health, but the amount you need depends on your age, activity level, body composition, health status, and goals. In this article, we’ll break down protein needs in a practical way and discuss when supplements, snacks, and drinks can be useful tools to help meet those needs.
Why Protein Matters

- They may provide greater satisfaction without causing rapid blood sugar spikes and the hunger or mental “chatter” that can lead to overeating at the next meal.
When someone has increased needs but cannot comfortably eat enough protein through regular meals, protein-fortified foods or supplements may be a helpful option for recovery, healing, depletion, or intense activity.
How Much Protein Do You Need?
Protein needs can vary widely based on age, sex, activity level, health goals, and medical conditions. The Recommended Dietary Allowance, or RDA, of 0.8 g/kg/day is intended for generally healthy adults. In the UK, the Reference Nutrient Intake, or RNI, is 0.75 g/kg/day.
Needs should be individualized, and in some cases, body weight adjustments may be appropriate, especially in obesity. Many people do not know how to calculate protein needs correctly or when adjustments are needed, which can lead to intakes that are either too high or too low. Working with a registered dietitian can be valuable for determining a safe and effective target.
In healthy adults with normal body weight who perform resistance exercise, research suggests that protein intakes above 1.6 g/kg/day may support lean muscle mass. In adults over 65, intakes in the range of 1.2 to 1.59 g/kg/day may be beneficial, particularly when combined with resistance training.
Men and women may also have different needs due to differences in body composition and lean mass, although individual needs should always be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

For many people with CKD stages 3–5, protein needs are often lower, while people on dialysis usually need more protein.
This is why it is important to know your kidney function before significantly increasing protein intake.
